A recent rally in Queens demonstrates the concerns of many Americans about the overreaching and harsh enforcement techniques used by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, better known as ICE. Protesters met in Jackson Heights at Roosevelt Avenue near Broadway and held up signs and medical gowns to express their displeasure with recent actions by the immigration agency, including the alleged hysterectomies performed on women at the Irwin County Detention Center and the unsafe conditions inside ICE facilities during the pandemic.
Unnecessary and Inhumane Procedures
According to a whistleblower complaint filed by Dawn Wooten, a nurse formerly employed by ICE’s Irwin County Detention Center, high rates of hysterectomies without medical justification are being performed on women who are held in the facility. At least five women who underwent the procedure did not know why they were subjected to hysterectomies, according to the complaint.
Unsafe Conditions for Immigrants in ICE Facilities
The latest allegations follow on the heels of reports that ICE facilities have not been implementing the recommended safety protocols for dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. This has increased the risk of contracting the virus for those who are detained in these facilities and has exposed many of them to the risk of serious side effects and the potential of prolonged hospitalization and possible death. For many of these individuals, finding the right New York immigration lawyer could be a matter of life of death.
