Officials in Mexico have announced that they will be taking steps to deport immigrants who attempted to rush the U.S. border on November 25, 2018, in an effort to enter the United States illegally. These immigrants have been traveling for weeks in a loosely organized caravan heading from countries in Central America toward the U.S.-Mexico border. Many of these individuals and families are fleeing violence and conditions of extreme hardship in their home countries. If they are deported from Mexico, they will be forced to return to these conditions and may be targeted for further violence upon their arrival.
Desperation and Despair
For many of these immigrants, the United States represented the last hope for anything approaching a normal life. Mexico has long indicated that it cannot support the immigrants passing through the country. Without an opportunity to plead their case for refugee status in the U.S., these individuals will face a trip back to the same conditions that prompted their exit in the first place. For many, this will represent a death sentence for themselves and their family members upon their return to their home countries. Approximately 500 people could be subjected to deportation from Mexico in the next few weeks.
